Reforms to Strengthen the European Monetary Union

On 2 October 2018, the Dahrendorf Forum, LSE’s European Institute, and the School of Public Policy hosted a lecture by Vítor Constâncio, former Vice President of the European Central Bank.

Mr Constâncio discussed possible reforms to strengthen the European Monetary Union (EMU). He identified the shortcomings of the EMU’s design as lacking three key elements: a mechanism for liquidity issues, a mechanism for stability, and supervision at EU level. Mr Constâncio then explored possible solutions, including the development of a central bank with inflation targeting facilities, the completion of a banking union, the renationalisation of fiscal policy, and further steps towards creating a political union.

Iain Begg, Co-Director of the Dahrendorf Forum, chaired the event.
