On 7 November 2018, the Dahrendorf Forum presented a panel discussion on the Brexit negotiations with particular focus on the UK’s negotiating strategy.
The cross-sectoral panel – bringing together insights from academia, policymakers, the media and think-tankers – included:
- Sara Hagemann, Associate Professor of European Politics at the LSE (Chair)
- Ben Martill, Dahrendorf Forum Postdoctoral Fellow at the LSE
- John Peet, Political Editor at The Economist
- Jill Rutter, Programme Director at the Institute for Government
- Uta Staiger, Executive Director of the UCL European Institute
- Sir Stephen Wall, former UK Permanent Representative to the EU
Taking the Dahrendorf Forum Working Paper ‘Cultures of Negotiation’ by Ben Martill and Uta Staiger as a starting point, the discussion assessed the progress made in the negotiations to date. Speakers examined how the EU and the UK have approached the negotiations differently, how successful the negotiators have been at reaching their objectives, and how the outcome of the first phase of negotiations will shape the Brexit process going forward.
