On 6 December 2018, members of Working Group II based at the Hertie School of Governance met with invited experts to discuss over dinner what challenges populism, the revival of nationalist politics, and social divides pose for liberal democracy.
Following brief introductory talks by two members of the working group, participants debated the need for new and effective narratives of European integration, the complex relationship between diversity and media communication, and the important role that culture and cultural policy play for European democracies. Bringing together academics, practitioners and think tankers, the event once again showed that exchange between participants with different professional backgrounds and areas of expertise is important to generate fresh insights. Many of the ideas developed during the discussion will be pursued further through research conducted by members of the working group.
